What is SEO exactly?

SEO—search engine optimization—has one purpose: It helps your website rank higher on Google and other search engines. For businesses, it means showing up when potential customers are actively looking for your products or services online. This is achieved through…
- Quality Content: The wider your net, the more likely potential customers are to find your website. At the same time, Google prioritizes high-quality content and harshly penalizes low-effort web pages.
- Performance: Slow, buggy websites (usually) rank poorly on Google, even if the content is solid. Ensuring your website works properly can boost your rankings (and ensures a good user experience/UX).
- Authority: Google prefers to provide search results it believes are trustworthy. Establishing your expertise on topics relevant to your business or organization
All three areas are interconnected. It’s hard to establish your authority without quality content. Weak performance can ruin quality content and keep you from establishing authority. And a lack of trustworthiness can negate new content.
Another way to think about SEO: Potential customers use Google to ask questions about services or products they want. SEO positions your website to offer the best answer.
The SEO FAQs section below breaks this down further. (Or reach out—I’m happy to explain!)

Client Spotlight: Fora Travel

I’ve helped some awesome companies & organizations achieve their SEO goals: Fora’s one of the biggest successes. Over the past three-plus years, I’ve helped the travel brand build a significant web presence, and Fora now competes with industry titans like Expedia and Tripadvisor on Google Search. The brand ranks high in national SERPs (and often appears in AI Overviews) for terms critical to their business model.
The proof: Try searching for a “travel advisor” or “travel agent” on Google. You’re going to see Fora pop up high in results.
But that’s national-facing SEO. For small and mid-sized businesses here in SLO County, the opportunities are even greater—and much easier to capture. With the right strategy, ranking high in local search results or AI Overviews is well within reach.

SEO FAQs
Why is SEO important? Do businesses in SLO County face enough competition to justify SEO expenses?
Broadly, SEO is simply another form of (indirect) advertising. It’s one tool out of many that helps your business get noticed online. Whether SEO is worth investing in varies by business, and certain types of businesses benefit more than others…

Restaurants, for example, are less likely to benefit from SEO services because most people search for places to eat on Google Maps rather than Google Search. (There are certainly exceptions, like restaurants that double as destinations or those in major cities like LA or NYC.)
Law offices, on the other hand, can definitely benefit from strong SEO. If a user knows they need a lawyer, Maps is great for identifying local options. If there’s any ambiguity though, users are far more likely to use Google Search to find legal assistance, probably to determine if they even need a lawyer. In this case, a blog post or service page on a lawyer’s website may have the answer they want. SEO creates that blog post or service page for this exact purpose. Good SEO makes sure your answer is the one users find.
San Luis Obispo County is one of the fasted growing counties in California, and businesses will only see increasing competition over the next few years and beyond. Strong digital marketing can help your business stand out now and through inevitable development.
What’s answr engine optimization (AEO)? Is it different from SEO?
Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is a new branch of SEO that’s geared toward optimizing content for AI-powered search…
Details
Let’s back up: In the past, ranking high in search engine results pages (SERPs) was the only way to consistently get noticed. Specifically, SEO’s goal was ranking in the top three search results, as clicks tend to plummet afterward. AI-powered search, however, has opened new doors for attracting attention: AI Overviews. These are direct answers to searches, and Google and other search engines’ AI pull these answers directly from websites’ blogs and other content…with sources. That’s where AEO comes in.
Getting featured in an AI overview is a golden opportunity to bypass SERPs and attract clicks. So how do you achieve this? By producing quality content. (Yes, it’s really that simple.) Traditional SEO relies on keyword optimization, which is still important—but since AI can generally understand content without tons of strategically placed keywords (what old-school search engines relied on), there’s way more emphasis on well-researched, authoritative content now.
I was a copywriter before I was an SEO expert. I know how to weave a tale, convey a message, and breakdown a complex topic for easy consumption. Blending strong copywriting with SEO best practices is what I do best. Reach out if you’d like a more comprehensive explanation of what AEO is and how I can help grow your business through it.
How long does it take to see SEO results?
It depends. Competition, market trends, and your starting point are all key factors. Generally, SEO is a long game whereas pay-per-click (SEM) marketing can see more immediate ROI results.
Details
Conventional wisdom (i.e. Google) says it take around three months to see notable SEO results and as long as nine to 12 months to see the full effects. In my experience, local SEO operates on a quicker timetable. I’ve had many clients where we saw some results immediately (like hitting the coveted first page on SERPs as soon as a blogpost was indexed)…then others where it did take a few weeks to a month so see worthwhile movement. Again, traffic, competition, and market trends all make a difference. If your business is in a competitive field, expect competitive SEO (but that’s all the more reason to invest).
If you’re looking for ASAP returns, I suggest investing in pay-per-click advertising and SEO. While you’ll likely see slower organic growth through this strategy, direct advertising can fund SEO efforts. Over time, your organic traffic may grow to a point where pay-per-click advertising is no longer necessary. If you’re not sure which strategy to pursue, why not ask a digital marketing pro?
Do you require a contract for your services?
Yes. I have a basic, easy-to-read freelancer agreement that outlines the services I’m to provide, rate details, length of contract (if applicable), etc. If your business or organization has a preferred template, that’s fine, too!
Do you only work with businesses in SLO County?
Nope! I work with businesses across the United States. Two of my biggest clients are based in New York City, and another’s headquartered in D.C., for example.
Do you perform all the work for the SEO services you provide?
Usually. In rare cases (and with permission), I do outsource some low-level SEO tasks to other freelancers or partners to free up my time to work on the high-level stuff. I always provide final QA and keep my clients in the know. If sensitive data is involved, I’m the only person who sees it.
